History of Foreign Languages Club
Foreign Languages Club is attached to the Student Union of the School of Foreign Languages of Soochow University. It makes full use of
the advantages of Foreign Languages School to attract the attention of English Lovers. In 2002, it was awarded as
one of the TOP10
students' associations. Now it has more than 200 members who come from School of Foreign Languages, Computer
School, Business
School, School of Social Science, School of Mathematic Science, School of Sports Science, School of
Literature, School of Medicine, School
of Arts, School of Politics & Public Administration, School of Electronic Information,
School of Law, etc. Now FLC has 19 faculties who are
ood at organizing and socializing. FLC has a series of activities which
are appreciated by the members both in the university and outside.
Foreign Languages Club was started by the Students' Union in September of 1996 for the purpose of stimulating students'
interet in
learning English. It aimed at provide an opportunity for English lovers to exchange with each other and native
speakers.
After its Establishment, FLC has been holding several events and activities frequently. In the end of 20th century, it has formed a fixed series
of activities, such as "English Corner", writing contests, and English lectures.
At the same time, the member recruiting has also been improving. The members were mostly undergraduates at the beginning, but now
the membership has been extended to postgraduates with its increasing advantages.
Entering 21st century, FLC developed to a new stage. In 2001, FLC began to cooperate with organizations and companies in the society,
which helped it extend its advantages and influence.
After 3 years of effort, in 2004, FLC recuited 172 new members and 14 new faculties in the newcomers, which set up a sound base for its
further development.
FLC now puts much emphasis on holding special events as well as maintains regular events. In September, English Corner invited
students from Inner Mongolia to exchange with club members. In October, English Corner focused on Halloween and invited several
overseas students whose countries celebrated Halloween. On October 31, FLC held a Halloween Party. With the join of other schools, FLC
became more acdemic oriented. In November, a lecture about internet English was held in East Campus.
Since its establishment, Foreign Languages Club has undergone many hardships, but it has grown up from a club with only less than 20
members to one with such a large number of members. It serves the interest of English lvoers from the beginning and has been
contributing a lot to the course of English learning in Suzhou University.
